Why Clothing Matters on a UTV Tour
A guided UTV tour through Vernal's backcountry puts you in an open-air Kawasaki KRX 1000 for three hours on dirt trails, desert washes, and canyon corridors. You are exposed to sun, wind, dust, and changing temperatures for the entire ride. The right clothing makes the difference between a comfortable adventure and a distracted one.
Utah's high desert climate is deceptive. Mornings can start cool โ even cold in spring and fall โ and climb to intense midday heat by the time you reach the turnaround point. Wind at speed in the KRX adds a wind-chill factor that surprises people who dressed only for the temperature at the trailhead.
Footwear: The Most Important Choice
Closed-toe shoes with good grip are required on every tour. Hiking boots or trail running shoes are ideal. Ankle-height boots give extra protection when stepping out on rocky terrain at stops โ petroglyph sites, overlooks, and trail rest points often have loose rock and uneven ground.
Avoid sandals, flip-flops, or any open-toe shoe. The terrain includes sharp rock, thorny brush, and fine desert sand that works into open footwear immediately. Sneakers are acceptable if they have decent tread, but smooth-soled fashion sneakers are not a good choice for the trail stops.
Pants and Legs
Long pants are strongly recommended. Lightweight hiking pants, cargo pants, or jeans all work well. The desert involves dust that coats everything below the dashboard, brush that scrapes against the vehicle on narrow trail sections, and sustained UV exposure that will burn exposed legs faster than most people expect at Vernal's 5,300-foot elevation.
If you strongly prefer shorts, choose a longer inseam and apply high-SPF sunscreen before you leave. Reapply if possible at stops. The sun exposure in the open KRX is significantly more intense than what you experience walking around town.
Upper Body: The Layer System
Layering is the key to all-day comfort in the Utah desert. A three-layer approach covers every condition you will encounter:
- Base layer: A moisture-wicking T-shirt or long-sleeve shirt. Cotton holds sweat and gets cold in wind. Synthetic or merino fabrics keep you dry.
- Mid layer: A lightweight fleece or zip-up hoodie. Essential for spring and fall tours, and useful even in summer for early morning starts. You can stash this in the KRX's storage when it warms up.
- Outer layer: A light windbreaker or shell jacket. Blocks wind and dust. Does not need to be heavy โ the goal is wind protection, not insulation.
In peak summer (June through August), the mid layer is often unnecessary after 10 AM. But the windbreaker still has value for dust protection in sandy trail sections.
Sun Protection
The Uintah Basin sits at 5,300 feet, and many trails climb higher. UV intensity at this altitude is significantly stronger than at sea level. A hat with a brim, UV-blocking sunglasses, and SPF 30+ sunscreen on all exposed skin are not optional.
A buff or neck gaiter is useful for dust protection and doubles as sun coverage for your neck. Dave and Trudy recommend bringing one even if you do not normally wear one โ by the second hour on a dusty trail, you will appreciate it.
What Adventure Tours Vernal Provides
You do not need to bring safety gear. Every tour includes helmets, a full safety briefing, and all equipment required to operate the Kawasaki KRX 1000. The machines have full roll cages, FOX 2.5 PODIUM LSC shocks, and power steering. Your job is to show up dressed for the desert โ Adventure Tours Vernal handles the rest.
For a complete packing list including water, snacks, cameras, and other non-clothing items, see the What to Bring page.
What to Leave Behind
A few things that do not belong on a UTV tour: loose scarves or dangling jewelry (entanglement risk near moving parts), white or light-colored clothing you care about (the red desert dust stains), heavy perfume or cologne (attracts insects in the backcountry), and valuable electronics you cannot secure in a zippered pocket.
